Mina favoritostar

In this post I talk about my favorite cheeses that I eat on more or less a daily basis. Main reason for eating them is the fermented properties, calcium, vitamin K, and protein. And of course because cheese is delicious! 😀

Cheddar

Cheddar is made from cow’s milk that has been matured for several months. In addition to being rich in protein and calcium, cheddar is a good source of vitamin K — especially vitamin K2. Vitamin K is important for heart and bone health. It prevents calcium from being deposited in the walls of your arteries and veins. Eating cheddar is one way to increase your vitamin K2 intake but main reason for me eating this cheese is that like the taste and since it is aged for a long time it is very low in lactose. Lactose my instill inflammation in the body.

Parmesan

Parmesan is a hard, aged cheese that is made from raw, unpasteurized cow’s milk that is aged for at least 12 months. Reason why is to kill harmful bacteria and produce a complex flavor. The final product is loaded with nutrients. Since Parmesan is rich in both calcium and phosphorus — nutrients that play a role in bone formation — it may promote bone health. Fermented products such as this cheese also benefits your gut bacteria.

Pecorino Romano

I absolutely love the mild taste of this cheese made from sheep’s milk. But it has heaps of health benefits too. Sheep milk is very gentle on the stomach and highly digestible. This is thanks to its unique casein protein profile. Sheep milk is an A2-type milk, meaning it does not contain bovine A1 beta-casein which has been identified as one of the major cow milk allergens. Sheep milk is also higher in short to medium-chain fatty acids. This means that these fats may be easier to digest due to more efficient metabolism. Finally, pecorino contains a good amount of calcium, potassium, and magnesium and is a good source of protein.

Feta

I also add feta cheese to this post which is something I have added more recently, mainly to top up my protein intake. It is made from sheep’s or goat’s milk.
